Wolfgang was at the Magdeburg Christmas market when a car crashed into the crowd. He tells BFMTV how the evening turned into drama.

Christmas carols have given way to sirens in Magdeburg. This Friday, December 20, a car crashed into the crowd at the Christmas market taking place in this German city, leaving more than 60 people injured and at least two dead, according to local authorities.

Working at the town hall of this town, Wolfgang spent the day at this Christmas market. Before the evening turned into drama, “the atmosphere was excellent,” he says on BFMTV.

“At 6:58 p.m., we could still hear Christmas carols, we were upstairs, we went downstairs, and suddenly there was silence,” he explains before continuing: “Suddenly, I heard my colleague say 'something is happening'”.

“A crowd of people poured into the streets”

Wolfgang then saw “unrest”, “people with children seeking shelter” and “children crying. “They told us 'a car drove into the crowd'”, he says.

“The sirens started to sound in the streets, they were the alarms. Suddenly a crowd of people flocked to the streets: the police, ambulance trucks, etc… Since then, I left Magdeburg but I saw a lot of emergency cars and firefighters,” adds Wolfgang.

The suspect in the alleged car-ramming attack was arrested at the scene. He is a 50-year-old doctor from Saudi Arabia, according to local authorities.
