Several arson attacks took place during the night from Thursday to Friday in the town of Crest, in Drôme, destroying vehicles and the house of an elected official, reveal our colleagues from Dauphiné released. In total, eleven vehicles were destroyed by fire or damage in this town of less than 9,000 inhabitants.
The LR mayor of Crest Stéphanie Karcher, who went to the scene in the middle of the night, specified that there had been four separate fires. “There was first a vehicle fire in a supermarket car park, which spread to a group of sheds. Then a van close to a house and a gas cubicle which spread to the house in the middle of the night.”
The gas and electricity network affected
It was the vehicle and the house of the Culture and Youth deputy, who slept there with his wife and son, she said. “They were saved at the last minute,” said the mayor, adding that their house was completely destroyed. The facts could be an “attempted homicide”, she estimated.
Then, “the team went to set fire in another street, then in a cypress tree along a retaining wall of the municipal swimming pool,” described Stéphanie Karcher. There is “a desire to harm, without a doubt. We are not used to having this level of violence,” she reacted.
The fires spread across the gas and electricity network to the neighboring town of Aouste-sur-Sye. Around 560 homes remained without access to gas on Friday morning, and problems remained on the electricity network.
