Incredible victory for Tottenham against Manchester United (4-3) in the quarter-finals of the League Cup! A completely crazy match with goals and suspense until the end. Spurs join Liverpool, Arsenal and Newcastle in the semi-finals…
What a crazy match between Tottenham and Manchester United in the quarter-finals of the English League Cup! At the end of a completely crazy encounter and a real offensive festival, it was ultimately the Spurs who had the last word (4-3) to secure their ticket to the last four. A totally improbable scenario in this opposition between two giants of English football.
A great start to the match for the Spurs
From the kick-off, Tottenham showed their intentions by showing crazy intensity and pressing very high. A strategy that paid off since Dominic Solanke, former great hope of Chelsea, opened the scoring in the 15th minute, well served by a perfect cross from Dier. The Spurs continued to push and doubled the lead just after the break by Kulusevski with a superb volley (46th). On fire, Solanke even scored a double in the 54th minute on a new serve from Dier. 3-0, the match seemed to be over.
Man United does not give up
But that was without counting on the pride and resources of Manchester United. Even trailing 3-0, the Red Devils didn’t give up. And with a lightning counter, Zirkzee gave his team hope by reducing the score (63rd). Tottenham then retreated and suffered the Mancunian fury. So much so that Diallo, who had just come on, brought United back to 3-2 in the 70th minute! The match was restarted.
Son frees Spurs, Evans shakes
In an unbearable end to the match, Tottenham had the merit of not panicking. On the contrary, they continued to play and project themselves forward. In the 88th minute, Son, until now rather discreet, appeared at the far post to take a cross from Perisic and score the 4-2 goal. Cruel for United but deserved for Spurs given their successful performance.
However, the Red Devils have not said their last word. In added time, defender Evans turned into an attacker to once again reduce the gap with a nice flat foot following a mix-up (4-3, 90th+2). Too late despite everything to hope for an extension. The score will remain there: 4-3 for Tottenham at the end of an epic match!
The main thing to remember:
- Tottenham s’impose 4-3 contre Manchester United
- Double from Solanke and goals from Kulusevski and Son for Spurs
- Zirkzee, Diallo and Evans scored for Man U
- Tottenham joins Liverpool, Arsenal and Newcastle in the semis
With this painful but very important victory, Ange Postecoglou’s men can continue to dream of a trophy this season. But the task promises to be difficult in the semi-final against top opponents like Liverpool or Arsenal. Verdict on January 7/8 (outbound) and February 4/5 (return).
