With the establishment of Éco Entreprise Québec (ÉEQ), selective picking becomes the responsibility of the MRC, rather than Recyc-Québec, but the costs related to this approach are now the responsibility of the producers, which explains why it There is no longer any charge for selective collection on citizens’ municipal tax bills.

This change takes effect on
January 2 and occurs following a modification of the regulation adopted in 2022 by the government on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). This modernization aims to reduce environmental impacts and strengthen public confidence in recycling.

Producers, manufacturers, distributors and retailers now take charge of the complete management of their products – containers, packaging and printed matter – throughout their life cycle and they will be responsible for ensuring the traceability, quality and recycling of these materials. For example, to meet this obligation, the Coopérative du Journal L’Oie Blanche has joined ÉEQ and will have to assume the costs related to the tonnage of paper printed during the year.

ÉEQ signed agreements with all municipalities, mostly via the MRCs, and ensured, among other things, standardization of materials. The costs are assumed by the producers, according to the principle of extended responsibility. (LOB)
