The crisis unit in Bercy has decided on a series of measures to support Mayotte, including the possibility for prefects to control prices, an aid fund for Mayotte businesses, or the sending of essential products by the country’s major companies.
Facing the extent of the damage in Mayotte after the passage of Cyclone Chido, Bercy opened a crisis unit on Monday chaired every day by the resigning Minister of the Economy, Antoine Armand.
In direct contact with the interministerial crisis unit, this Bercy unit makes it possible to “monitor the situation on the ground and take the necessary emergency measures”, indicates the ministry.
Among the first measures taken: the publication of a decree this weekend to give the prefect the possibility of regulating the prices of essential products. Objective: to avoid a surge in prices and control the risk of shortages.
Large French companies such as Totalenergies or major retail brands are also mobilized by the unit to meet the needs of the island. Carrefour notably announced the immediate shipment of 50 tonnes of essential products and Les Mousquetaires (Intermarché) around 200 tonnes.
Restore the mobile network
Antoine Armand also requested that “first concrete actions be taken to restore” the mobile network and Internet. “Tactical bubbles are deployed by Orange to create essential network points. They are being transported,” specifies Bercy.
Finally, the crisis unit of the Ministry of the Economy made it possible to release an initial emergency fund intended for Mahorese businesses affected by Cyclone Chido. “200,000 euros, from the solidarity fund of all the CCIs in the country, will be sent to the CCI maheure”, indicates the ministry.
At the same time, Emmanuel Macron, during his trip to the island this Thursday, announced the establishment a compensation fund for the uninsured.
