Tributes have been paid to a young Irish football prospect who is fighting for his life in Cork hospital after suffering serious injuries following a road accident involving an electric motorcycle in his home town of Limerick, this Monday December 16.
The victim was identified locally as Limerick native Josh Quinlivan, who celebrated his 21st birthday on December 10 last year.
Mr Quinlivan, formerly captain of League of Ireland U19 side Treaty United FC, and having made appearances for Cork City U19 and Fairview Rangers FC, was most recently playing as a striker for Pike Rovers FC having joined the Limerick club earlier in the season.
Authorities have appealed for witnesses regarding the “serious road incident which occurred on the Kilmallock Road (Old Cork Road) in Limerick city on Monday evening, December 16.”
A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said that “a man in his 20s, who was riding an electric motorbike, was found with serious injuries on the road at around 7.10pm” on Monday.
The spokesperson added that “the injured man was taken to University Hospital Limerick. He has since been transferred to Cork University Hospital where his condition is described as critical. »
A representative from Pike Rovers FC paid tribute to Mr Quinlivan, saying “everyone at the club wishes Josh a full and speedy recovery”.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Josh and his family during this difficult time. He is an excellent striker. For a big guy he’s very quiet and modest, he’s a really nice and genuine young man. He comes from a good family and works as a courier with his father and brother. »
“When things like this happen, it puts everything into perspective. You think you’re in trouble until something like this knocks on your door. »
“It’s a huge shock, he’s a much-loved member of the Pike Rovers family. »
In January 2022, Mr Quinlivan was identified as one of twenty “emerging talents” under the age of 20 in the League of Ireland.
Authorities have urged anyone with video or information relating to the accident to contact Roxboro Garda Station on 061 214 340, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any other Garda station.
