Two incidents – a fire and smashed windows – targeted Jewish community buildings in the West Island of Montreal.
Posted at 9:57 a.m.
The first event, the fire, targeted a synagogue located on Westpark Street, at the corner of Roger-Pilon Street, in Dollard-des-Ormeaux. A little before 3 a.m., a 9-1-1 call reported the start of the fire. According to the spokesperson for the Montreal Police Service (SPVM), Véronique Dubuc, the police officers called to the scene extinguished the fire.
The fire caused no injuries. It was only after checks that an incendiary object was found. Witnesses interviewed reported a suspect quickly leaving the scene.
The arson unit is on site to conduct its investigation. The Hate Incidents and Hate Crimes Unit has been made aware of the situation.
A nearby building targeted
While analyzing the initial scene around 7:20 a.m., police noticed broken windows in a building located near the synagogue. This, too, is a building belonging to the Jewish community. No incendiary objects were found on site.
Quebec Minister of Public Security François Bonnardel reacted on X and denounced the events that occurred last night. He emphasizes that the SPVM will increase its visibility in the neighborhood.
