THE TREND
(Boursier.com) — Is there still suspense over the decision of the American Federal Reserve on rates which will be announced in the evening, after the Paris close? None according to the CME Group’s Fedwatch consensus which shows more than 95% of investors betting on a quarter-point drop in key rates. Observers are much more interested in the content of Jerome Powell’s speech as well as the central bank’s updated forecasts.
The question is whether or not the Fed will pause its monetary easing cycle at its January meeting. Before tonight’s speech, 80% think that there will indeed be a break in January. Uncertainty remains high in the United States: inflation is proving resilient and labor markets remain solid, while the measures that the new president-elect Donald Trump will take are still to be clarified.
While waiting for the Fed meeting, the CAC 40 should open close to its closing level yesterday, potentially with a slight upward bias according to the “futures”, thirty minutes from the start of the session.
WALL STREET
Wall Street lost some ground on Tuesday: the S&P 500 lost 0.39% to 6,050 points, the Dow Jones lost 0.61% to 43,449 points and the Nasdaq weakened by 0.32% to 20,109 points. Caution prevailed after the series of records, particularly on the Nasdaq side, while the Fed’s task may prove more complicated than expected in a context of “sticky” inflation in the coming months with a view to arrival of Donald Trump at the White House.
