In the Bas-Chantenay district of Nantes, the Misery quarry has become a place for visitors to stroll. The Extraordinary Garden continues to change, particularly in its eastern part. Work continues with the first plantings in December.

“Island of freshness”

The concrete slab gradually gives way to natural spaces. Ultimately, 280 will be planted during this second phase.

“Little by little, the eastern part of the Extraordinary Garden is taking shape and will join its western neighbor next year in order to create a living and walking space as unique as it is green,” describes the City of Nantes in the press. .

As a reminder, the eastern part of the garden will consist of a natural swimming pool extending over 700 m², whose opening for swimming is planned for spring 2026. A large-scale tent will be set up from January to March to ensure protection of the waterproofing work.

The project leaders want to offer “an island of freshness and nature in the heart of the city”.

Climbing and panorama

Today, 55 climbing routes are accessible in the Nantes garden. In spring 2025, 30 new lanes will be installed.

The new phase of the Extraordinary Garden will offer a free range of free sports activities, in addition to climbing. The more adventurous can try the sackline (5 straps installed from 5 to 25 meters) and the highline (climbing route suspended 20 meters high).

« Ces highlines will be intended only for expert practitioners, upon membership with the association which will manage it,” specifies the City of Nantes.

A “via ferrata” will allow the general public to discover the garden in a different way
from a new angle and admire the panorama of Bas Chantenay. “Between vertical hiking and climbing, this activity will offer two routes of moderate difficulty, suspended from 15 to 20 meters in height,” describes the community.

A free activity, accessible subject to reservation (access possible from November 2025 for people who do not need supervision, spring 2026 for others).

Overall, the second phase of the Extraordinary Garden includes 1.6 hectares of surface area, including more than 1 hectare dewatered, 430 trees or a natural pond of 700 m2. The forecast budget of the project is estimated at 5.5 million euros.

Ultimately, the Extraordinary Garden will offer a green setting in Bas-Chantenay and will surround the future City of Imaginations.
