The main suspect in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was indicted on Tuesday by the Manhattan district attorney.
Luigi Mangione, the main suspect in the murder of Brian Thompson, CEO of the UnitedHealthcare insurance company, was indicted for murder in connection with “a terrorist act” by Manhattan prosecutor Alvin Bragg on Tuesday, December 17.
“It was an assassination which was supposed to arouse terror”, underlined the magistrate during a press conference, regarding the act attributed to Luigi Mangione. The prosecutor added that he hoped for the rapid transfer of the suspect, arrested about 500 kilometers from New York last week, to stand trial for the murder of Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthCare. A transfer that the principal concerned contests.
A disconcerting profile
Arrested on December 9, after five days of tracking, the young man is the alleged murderer of Brian Thompson, former CEO of the insurance company Unitedhealthcare. A back injury would have pushed the 26-year-old to act.
“It appears that he had an accident which led to him having back surgery in July 2023 and this injury ruined his life,” explained to the channel on Thursday NBC New York Joseph Kennythe city’s chief police investigator, even though he assures that he has never been insured by UnitedHealthcare. He suggested that the suspect may have targeted the company because of its status as the largest private health insurer in the United States.
His profile quickly caught the attention of the authorities. A young graduate in computer science and mathematics from a wealthy Italian-American family in Maryland, Luigi Mangione’s career path seems exemplary so far.
Many pots of money to support the 26-year-old in his defense reached tens of thousands of dollars before being closed. Some, like Nathalie Arthaud, spokesperson for Lutte Ouvrière, have described Luigi Mangione as an “individual vigilante.”
