Raptors – After the discovery of the corpse of a griffon vulture torn to pieces at the foot of a wind turbine, the Pyrénées-Orientales prefecture shut down the wind farm on the day
Since December 10, the El Singla wind farm, located in Prugnanes, has only been operating at night. A decision taken by the Pyrénées-Orientales prefecture, a few days after the discovery of the torn corpse of a griffon vulture at the foot of a wind turbine.
“The Prugnanes park is located near the Galamus gorges which are home to three of the four species of vultures nesting in France,” explains the Roussillon Ornithological Group. These are the griffon vulture, the Egyptian vulture and the bearded vulture. These last two species are on the global red list of threatened species.
Not the first time
It was a griffon vulture that was discovered at the foot of the wind turbine. “Unfortunately this is not the first time that we have observed the destruction of protected species by wind turbines,” say bird protectors. A few years ago a griffon vulture was found decapitated at the foot of a wind turbine in Lesquerdes park. More recently, it was a circaetus Jean-Le-Blanc who was rescued, injured, at the foot of a wind turbine near Pézilla-la-Rivière. »
