The senior Russian army official and his assistant died in the explosion of a scooter where a bomb had been hidden. Controlled remotely, the explosive was clearly aimed at the soldier, who was leaving a building to go to his car when the detonation blew him away.

Ukrainian security services immediately claimed responsibility for the assassination. The day before, they had accused the senior officer of having perpetrated “war crimes”. According to the kyiv army, the general ordered the use of chemical weapons against Ukrainian troops. The Russian investigative committee has opened an investigation for “assassination”, “attack” and “arms trafficking”, in order to shed light on this very rare attack in the Russian capital. “An unprecedented crime has been committed in Moscow,” wrote the Russian daily Kommersant on his site.
