When sports stars become referees for a day!

What if the biggest stars of French sport swapped their jerseys for that of referees for a day? This is the challenge taken up by several high-level athletes to raise awareness among young people of this essential role. Exclusive report at the heart of this extraordinary experience…

Imagine for a moment Kylian Mbappé or Antoine Dupont swapping their usual jersey for a black tunic and a whistle around their neck. This is the somewhat crazy challenge taken up by several leading French athletes as part of the “Arbitration Days” organized by La Poste. The objective? Raise awareness among young people of this essential but sometimes unloved role.

When the stars don the whistle

This original initiative took place last Wednesday on the pitch of FC Issy in Hauts-de-Seine. On the program, youth matches punctuated by the whistles of unexpected guest stars:

  • Christian Karembeu, 98 world champion and sponsor of the operation
  • Gaël Fickou, international rugby union player
  • Franck Seguela, Olympic vice-champion of 3×3 basketball

Under the watchful eye of three international referees, Alexandra Collin, Audrey Gerbel and Victoria Beyer, the athletes took part in the game with pleasure and seriousness. The objective is to live this unique experience from the inside and to transmit their passion.

The challenge of daily refereeing

Beyond this spotlight operation, it is above all a question of highlighting the crucial issues surrounding amateur arbitration. A thankless and demanding role, often the target of criticism and even sometimes violence. However, without referees, no competitions possible.

Being a referee is first and foremost a passion. But it also requires a lot of investment, rigor and a huge dose of mentality. It takes courage to put on that jersey every weekend.

says Alexandra Collin, international referee.

However, exercising this function is essential to ensure the smooth running of matches, enforce the rules and embody the values of sport. A constant commitment which deserves to be promoted among young graduates.

Make young people want to get involved

The “Referee for a day, referee always” operation aims to encourage vocations among the young footballers present. The message is clear: refereeing is a school of life that allows you to surpass yourself and experience sport differently.

This day will also have allowed break certain prejudices on the role of the man in black. Concentration, dialogue, management of emotions… There are many qualities required. A stimulating challenge for the young generation in search of values and commitment.

We hope that this day will have made some people want to take the plunge. Refereeing needs new blood and enthusiasts to take over.

Positive Christian Karembeu

An original initiative to be welcomed and which should spread to other disciplines. A reminder that behind each whistle lies a sport that is more responsible and exciting than ever. So, are you ready to take on the challenge?
