DAZN’s exorbitant prices boost piracy, even Arcom agrees!

The Regulatory Authority for Audiovisual and Digital Communication (Arcom) has, among other things, recovered the prerogatives of Hadopi. And it is in this sense that this organization is in charge of the fight against piracy in France.

Roch-Olivier Maistre, its president, was questioned this Wednesday, October 16 by the Senate Culture Committee. He notably returned to Arcom’s efforts over several years with the blocking of 5,000 illicit sites. This has even tended to intensify since the start of the season, especially as we have seen that the broadcasting of illegal streams and the use of IPTV is exploding. Thus, 510 pirate portals were blocked in France in this context.

“Exorbitant prices fuel piracy”

Will this method be enough to eliminate this phenomenon? Not necessarily according to the manager. Quoted by Le Figarohe specifies as follows:

But we see it clearly. When there is an offer at a balanced and reasonable price for the consumer, piracy, I was going to say, disappears. In terms of music, it’s very clear. Piracy has melted like snow in the sun because we can access an almost universal offer for a reasonable price. When we have exorbitant prices, we are sure to fuel piracy.

Of course, Roch-Olivier Maistre does not name him, but his words very quickly make us think of DAZN. The sports streaming platform has been widely criticized for its overly expensive prices since its arrival in France. She has since tried to rectify the situation with some promotional offers. Moreover, the service will allow you to subscribe from October 27 for 30 euros per month for two screens (i.e. 15 euros per person). It remains to be seen whether this will be enough.

Working on the legal offer

The Arcom leader’s statement ultimately agrees with the opinion of many other observers. To cite just one example, Benoît Grunemwald, cybersecurity expert at ESET, believes that repressing hacking via technical means will not be enough. He recently clarified that a reduction in the prices of the legal offer could be the solution. He cited the example of video games:

There was less piracy when games were cheaper and more accessible, especially with free versions.
