As Storm Éowyn prepares to hit the British Isles with a formidable intensitythe question arises: will the Côte-d’Or be affected by this phenomenon meteorological?

According to Thibault Mascia, amateur forecaster at Météo Côte-d'Or, the inhabitants of Burgundy Franche-Comté can reassure themselves.

Up to -40 degrees in the United States

Indeed, an exceptional cold snap recently swept across the United States, with temperatures oscillating between -40 and -30 degrees. “It even snowed in the Gulf of Mexico, which is on the same latitude as central Algeria…” explains Thibault. This polar cold has since crossed the Atlantic, where it encountering warmer air masses. This thermal shock fuels the jet stream, which intensifies the force of the wind.

At the same time, a depression coming from southern Mexico intensified as it crossed the Atlantic. “There is a 'weather bomb'that is to say that the depression will deepen quickly,” specifies Thibault Mascia. This phenomenon, defined by a drop in atmospheric pressure of 24 hPa in less than 24 hours, is the source of Éowyn's power.

“The storm will pass over France and will not be affected,” assures the forecaster. “Only the Channel coasts could experience winds of 100 km/h around. »

In Côte-d'Or, the consequences should be minimal. “We will have a slight southerly wind, barely 50 km/h,” adds the head of Météo Côte-d’Or. “In other words, the region should be spared by Éowyn's fury, unlike our British neighbors. »

“On the other hand, we can predict a potential southerly gale during the night of Sunday to next Mondaywith gusts blowing up to 100 km/h in the Saône plain. »
