In May 2024, the small town of Épgard (Eure), near Neubourg, saw the arrival of its first video surveillance cameras.
In total, seven cameras were installed, on the advice of the national gendarmerie, at strategic points such as the entrances and exits of towns, the town hall, schools and the multipurpose room which will soon be renovated.
“Strong problem of incivility”
“We don’t monitor, we protect”insists the mayor, Pascal Demarewhich rejects the term 'video surveillance'. “Only three people, including me, can have access to the camera images, it’s very regulated,” he reassures. And added: “We have already had two criminal cases resolved thanks to our cameras. » This then responded to a “ strong problem of incivility in the areas of the multipurpose room and the football field.
The elected official remembers “doors torn off, damaged roof covering, damaged gutters, broken windows”. The troublemaker(s) were never identified, but Pascal Demare assures that “as soon as the cameras were installed, everything stopped».
€38,000 for the cameras
And to prevent young people from climbing on the roof of the multipurpose room, a barrier with spikes had been installed. The installation of these seven cameras as well as the image reception device in the town hall have cost nearly €38,000 subsidized at 60%.
The mayor of Épgard does not regret this investment. “For two years, the different degradationswe almostcost, alone, €16,000. This is almost our share for installing the cameras. »
