An LPO-certified shelter will soon see the light of day in Malataverne (Drôme), a municipality very committed to environmental protection: an agreement has just been signed between the municipality, the LPO and the Vinci Autoroutes foundation which will finance 80% of the project. .
An “LPO-labeled refuge”, an area where nature must and will gradually regain its rights: Malataverne in the south of Drôme is committed to this program which will really come to fruition within three years but the municipality has been leading a proactive policy since 2020 For an eco-responsible living environment. And this goes well beyond the development of cycle paths between neighborhoods explains the mayor, Véronique Alliez: “ostarted with the creation of a municipal associative apiary, we developed manual road maintenance, we moved towards pesticide-free, we limited watering in the event of a water shortage and the latest innovation is a chicken coop inaugurated last Friday“. The logical continuation was the creation of an LPO-labeled refuge to restore its place to fauna and flora.
A three-year project
An agreement has just been signed between the municipality, the environmental protection association and the Vinci highways foundation. The group manages a “biodiversity mission” and will finance 80% of the project of Malataverne estimated at 32,000 euros. It must be said that the Montélimar Sud interchange is located within the territory of the municipality. This project of LPO labeled shelter will be spread over 3 years, with a first year, 2025, which will be essential. Before any development, a diagnosis of biodiversity must be established. Margaux Sicre is responsible for this file within the LPO: “for example, there may be a lack of hedges because the species cannot protect themselves, it may be placing nest boxes on trees that are still too young and there are no natural cavities for cave birds, in fact. everything will depend on this first diagnosis“.
An educational pool to come
This also concerns wetlands, if there are any missing, moreover the town hall of Malataverne has already planned to dig a pond: “it will be an educational pond with plantations, all near the apiaries and there will be monitoring by the LPO of the fauna and flora” explains Véronique Alliez. “Of the actions will be carried out aimed at different audiences in particular the children of the school, the leisure center and the crèche and all this over three years“.
A thousand LPO-certified shelters in Drôme and Ardèche
Malataverne is not an exception: there are also more and more LPO-labelled shelters where biodiversity regains its rights. There are more than a thousand today in Drôme and Ardèche, spread over 4,400 hectares. The majority of these “green zones” are found in private homes, more than 9 out of 10, but there are also some in educational establishments and businesses. Malataverne will be the 22nd community to enter the system after (among others) Montélimar, Annonay or Saint-Jean-de-Galaure.
