Monday evening after the interview with the prefect of Landes, Françoise Tahéri, the head of the FDSEA of Landes, Michel Larrère had reminded him, with the leaders of the Young Farmers (JA), of the firm rejection of the EU-Mercosur free trade treaty: “we asked him to back up our words, we hope that if all the departments did the same, that will put additional pressure on our president currently in Brazil.”
« A real stab in the back”
It is this treaty, between Europe and South America, which crystallizes the tensions and the return of farmers to the streets, this Monday, November 18: “It is a real stab in the back for the Landes and French agriculture, complains the Landes leader of the majority union. We, in the Landes, make a lot of festive products. We will be competing in poultry, cattle, cereals, corn, oil…”.
We're going to import what we don't want to eat, what the consumer doesn't want to eat, we're cheating them.
To argue for this rejection, farmers complain in particular about the standards, which are different between Europe and South America. “They are not the same as us, and in the end these products are cheaper. “These standards would be the same as ours, we would be competitive” assures Michel Larrère.
Simplification on the agenda
Regarding more local issues, Françoise Tahéri was asked to get back to work, particularly on simplification. The prefect has already announced two work meetings to them starting next week. Should be addressed, the issues of water, avian flu and even the aid in place. “We have the feeling that she listened to us, it’s time to act now,” concluded the president of the local FSDEA.
