Wild boar hunting and trapping: in Finistère, measures for increased regulation

“Faced with the strong growth in the wild boar population in Finistère, the increasingly significant damage they are causing on agricultural areas [et] of the threats they pose to the safety of people”, according to the words of a prefectural press release, a meeting was organized this Monday, November 18, with “all the actors concerned” and “to agree together on the most adapted to regulate this species.

“The lieutenants of louveterie, placed under the authority of the prefect, can also be mobilized”

“Voluntarism” of hunting societies

First, the document recalls, there is hunting, which “remains the main lever for regulating populations”, the wild boar can be hunted until March 31, 2025. Thus, “upon proof of proven damage, the lieutenants of louveterie, placed under the authority of the prefect, can also be mobilized, to assess the situation and intervene in an appropriate manner via administrative searches or night shooting (only louveterie lieutenants are authorized to carry out this night shooting)”.

Furthermore, state services evoke the “voluntarism” of hunting companies: “a joint letter from the prefect, the presidents of the AMF and the AMRF and the departmental federation of hunters of Finistère will be sent to them in this meaning.

“The prefect believes that trapping can contribute to controlling wild boar populations, whether in peri-urban areas or in heavily predated agricultural areas”

Trapping throughout the department

“In addition to these measures”, another means of regulation is put forward: trapping, “strictly supervised”, possible throughout the department. “The prefect believes that this solution can contribute to controlling wild boar populations, whether in peri-urban areas or in heavily predated agricultural areas,” says the press release. It “can be carried out with selective traps such as cage traps, enclosure traps, falling net devices”, by “approved trappers trained for this purpose and holding a valid hunting license”, and this “under cover of “an individual authorization issued by the DDTM of Finistère”.

The question of evacuation

The Finistère Hunters’ Federation “has already provided the first training courses”. Finally, regarding “the evacuation of animals thus trapped and then slaughtered”, “it was agreed that the prefect, the presidents of the AMF and the AMRF will contact the presidents of the EPCI on this subject”.
