Since 2018, the Department of Hérault launched a major operation annual planting to compensate for the removal of risky, diseased or aging trees along its roads. This Wednesday, November 13, 2024, these are 142 trees and more than 4,000 varied shrubs which will be planted by the departmental road teams. The operation will be carried out on ten sites, spread across the entire Hérault region, in: Fraïsse-sur-Agout, Aigne, Villemagne-l'Argentière, Béziers, Poussan, Pouzols, Nizas, Sauteyrargues and Boisseron.
More than 6,000 trees and shrubs
Over the past six years, more than 6,000 trees and shrubs were planted along the roads and cycle paths during these days. There are more than 40 different speciesall adapted to the local context of the soils and the Mediterranean climate.
In total, nearly 70 sites like abandoned roads, rest areas and edges of greenways have been planted with trees, thus preserving the landscape and biodiversity, while fighting against air pollution and heat islands.
The essential place for trees:
– A tree absorbs around 25kg of CO2 per year.
– Every day, a French person emits approximately the entire amount of CO2 that a tree is capable of storing in carbon emissions in a year.
– A French person releases approximately all of what a tree is capable of storing in CO2 per day.
– In connection with trees, many wild species live: insects, mammals, birds but also lichens, moss and plants. Thus, more than 400 species of invertebrates have been recorded on an old oak tree.
