“Crystal meth”: nearly 15 kg seized in a Quebec warehouse

The Quebec police discovered no less than 15 kg of “white powder” resembling crystal meth, hidden among vegetables in a warehouse in Sainte-Foy.

The operation began shortly after 7 a.m. Thursday morning in a warehouse on Watt Avenue.

“An individual contacted us to mention that there was suspicious content in boxes,” indicates Sandra Dion, spokesperson for the Quebec City Police Service (SPVQ).

The substance that was found in crates of vegetables is probably similar to crystal meth. According to our information, the boxes in question came from Sacramento, California.

“The file is still in progress as we speak,” underlines Mme Dion. The latter specifies, however, that the case has been transferred to the Sûreté du Québec.

The authorities, however, do not mention any arrests in this case.

The substance was found camouflaged in vegetable crates.

A popular drug

The crystal meth is the purest form of methamphetamine, one of the most powerful psychostimulants there is, according to the National Institute of Public Health of Quebec.

The substance has direct effects on sexual desire, pleasure and risk-taking by interfering with certain brain molecules.

It has been particularly popular in Quebec for some time. As street gangs and bikers vie for control of cocaine, the drug market crystal meth is making its way among consumers, according to former SPVQ investigator Roger Ferland.

“The consumer in the street, all he wants is to buzz. He doesn’t want to find himself in the middle. It’s easier to turn to the crystal meth“, he specifies.

Inexpensive

The SPVQ has also seized it on at least six occasions during searches over the past eight months, even though we barely heard anything about it just two years earlier.

The boxes were located in a warehouse on Watt Avenue, in the Sainte-Foy sector.

“It’s a new phenomenon coming from the West. It is a drug that is becoming less and less expensive and accessible,” says Mr. Ferland.

The price per kilo of crystal meth would be approximately between $24,000 and $29,000 currently in Quebec. For the consumer, they can purchase a gram for between $80 and $120.
