for David Dehenauw, “it has nothing to do with global warming”

On Thursday, a tornado crossed part of Belgium causing major damage, fortunately only material. This answers a question that many people ask themselves. “There have always been tornadoes of this type. There are 5 to 10 of them per year in Belgium even if we can miss a few when they take place in deserted places. In this day and age, with smartphones, it’s easier to see them because you can record the images.” Mr. Weather explains to us that they are not all predictable. Far from it. “We didn’t see what happened on Thursday in Beauvechain and Flemish Brabant coming. It’s very difficult, in fact, to know where and when they are likely to arrive.”

Winds could reach 180 or even 200 km/h in Beauvechain. “It would, at first glance, be a type 2 tornado on our scale (Editor’s note: Fujita) which has 5. The one in Léglise on September 20, 1982 was type 3 with winds reaching 250 km/h. At the time, there was much more damage than in Beauvechain.” Another type 3 tornado occurred on June 25, 1967, in the Oostmalle region (Antwerp).

A tornado crossed part of Belgium this Thursday, the images are impressive: a municipal emergency phase triggered in Beauvechain, many homes affected (video)
