Geneva: extracurriculars will cost more

All families will have to put their hand in their pocket for extracurriculars. Gathered in a general assembly on Saturday, the Geneva municipalities that are members of the Intercommunal Group for Extracurricular Activities (GIAP) validated an overhaul of prices. This puts an end to the free provision previously granted to families with modest incomes.

Indeed, in a press release, GIAP indicates that “all income categories are affected by this new pricing. However, a progressive exemption system is planned so that low-income families are not harmed by the reform.”

For example, a family with two children in after-school four lunchtimes and two afternoons per week will pay, depending on their income, a minimum of 4.25 francs per child per month and a maximum of 175 francs per child per month. Parents will be informed of the new fee schedule before registration in spring 2025.

According to GIAP, this overhaul is necessary in view of cost increases linked to changes in after-school care standards.

The Geneva municipalities also voted for a major organizational reform. Among the measures planned for the next three years, the commitment of 750 people each year in the field to strengthen support and increase the socio-educational skills of staff, as well as training programs.
