A giant fight involving two groups of Eritreans bringing together dozens of people injured a dozen on Saturday in Opfikon (ZH). A dozen people were injured and had to be taken to hospital. A major police operation is underway.

More than fifty people took part in the brawl between anti and pro-government Eritreans at Glattpark, in the suburbs of Zurich. Two police helicopters landed in the park and a dozen cars drove to the spot.

Various rescue workers were mobilised. In addition, two rescue helicopters were ready to intervene in the event of an emergency.

The police managed to separate the groups and disperse the gathering. Seven people were seriously injured and five lightly, according to the police spokesman.

Eritrean Festival in St. Gallen

Those involved in the clashes were participants and opponents of a festival in support of Eritrean power due to take place on Saturday in Oberuzwil, in the canton of St. Gallen.

Faced with the threat of opponents who converged on the places from all over Switzerland, as well as the latest news from Israel (see box)it was eventually canceled at the last minute by the organizers due to fears of excessive violence.

According to the police spokesman, some of the participants then moved to Opfikon. The newspaper St.Galler Taggblatt raises rumors about another festival being held in Zurich.

It is in this context that hundreds of opponents clashed with supporters of the regime ultra-authoritarian of President Isaias Afewerki, as well as law enforcement. The clash was violent, and a dozen people had to be taken to hospital.
