Accident on route 116: A teenager is said to have died during a street race

A possible street race at crazy speeds between two 17-year-old teenagers in the middle of rush hour ended tragically on Wednesday morning, on Route 116, in Longueuil: one died, while the other been arrested.

The tragedy occurred around 7:40 a.m. on route 116 west, between Édouard and Taschereau boulevards.
Many witnesses reportedly saw the two young men – each driving a small Mini Cooper car – driving at very high speed.

“It must have been going over 160 km / h,” said a witness who was traveling on Route 116 and who was dangerously overtaken by the two drivers.
The speeders would have made illegal overtaking by the shoulder, while at this time of day, Route 116 is quite busy.

At some point, one of the two teenagers would have lost control of his car. It crossed the three lanes of traffic to hit head-on the concrete wall separating the west and east bays.
The car then rolled over several times, cut a Hydro-Québec pole, before ending up in a ditch along the expressways.
The teenager, who was alone on board, was quickly transported to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.
The Longueuil police confirmed his death at the end of the morning.

The other young man, who was also driving a Mini Cooper, also swerved at the same time and his car ended up in the grass at the side of the road. He was not injured, but was arrested on the spot by the police for taking part in what looks like a street race.
He was questioned by investigators and appeared in the Youth Chamber at the end of the afternoon. He was charged with dangerous driving causing death.

The Court has issued an order preventing us from revealing the identity of the accused and the victim or from providing any information that would reveal their connection.

Route 116 was completely closed to westbound traffic for police investigation for part of the day, before being reopened shortly after 3 p.m.
