Driver dies after refusing to comply

A 27-year-old Belgian driver died in an accident on the evening of Monday 2 September after fleeing a traffic stop. An investigation has been opened for aggravated refusal to comply.

A 27-year-old driver died following a road accident after a chase with the police, in Coquelles, in the Calais conurbation, BFM Grand Littoral learned from the Boulogne-sur-Mer prosecutor, confirming information from France 3 Hauts-de-France.

It was around 10 p.m. this Monday when police decided to check a vehicle in the town of Audresselles (Pas-de-Calais), but the vehicle fled.

Accelerating at a roundabout

The vehicle was spotted in the Calais area. After another unsuccessful attempt to stop it, a chase began, the prosecution reported.

“Followed by three police patrols in the commune of Coquelles, the vehicle was driving at a moderate speed before accelerating sharply and finding itself facing a roundabout and crossing it,” said Guirec Le Bras, public prosecutor in Boulogne-sur-Mer.

While fleeing, the driver eventually lost control of his vehicle. Police and emergency services pronounced the driver dead at the scene of the accident at 11:50 p.m.

“An investigation has been opened for aggravated refusal to comply, entrusted to the gendarmerie. In this context, hearings and checks will be conducted, as well as an autopsy carried out,” the public prosecutor said.
