The star presenter of the Qatari channel Al Jazeera Abdessamad Nacir was fired on Wednesday, May 31, 2023. Known on social networks as being a fervent defender of the Moroccanness of the Sahara and the causes of the kingdom, the presenter of the news channel Al Jazeera was thanked for his positions.

According to the National Syndicate of the Moroccan Press (SNPM), the Doha-based channel fired Moroccan journalist Abdessamad Nacir after he “defended Moroccan women in a tweet in response to Algerian state media”. His general manager would have asked him to delete this tweet, which the journalist refused.

“The National Syndicate of the Moroccan Press hastened to carry out the necessary and necessary investigations into the decision taken by the management of Al-Jazeera, and it has clearly seen a set of facts, highlighting in this context, colleague Abdessamad Nacir, took the initiative to publish a tweet defending the honor of Moroccan women, after being the object of outrage by an official Algerian media, which accused the Moroccan State of trafficking in modesty and honor of Moroccan women”, can we read in the press release published by the central trade union. The report in question was a collection of insults and accusations, calling the kingdom a “narco-state that prostitutes its own people”.

The SNPM thus directly pointed to the leaders of the group who “implicitly approve of hostile attitudes towards Morocco, since they have never taken binding measures in similar cases”, while pointing to interference by the “lobby of Algeria, inside and outside the chain guiding this bad game”. Same story from the Moroccan National Association of Publishers whose executive office held a meeting on Thursday June 1 devoted to the Abdessamad Nacir affair.

The association chaired by Driss Chahtane strongly condemned the decision to dismiss Mr. Nacir, “one of the best journalists who has served the Al Jazeera channel professionally since its launch in 1997.” ANME condemns the attitude of the channel’s management, which has not bothered to sanction other journalists from the eastern neighbor for similar acts… And like ANME, SNMP, Other organizations have announced their support for Mr. Nacir and solidarity campaigns on social networks have been launched.
