Polisario supporters in Mauritania denounce the rapprochement with Morocco. The day after the signing of a bilateral memorandum of understanding on electricity and renewable energies, the Union of Forces for Progress warned against Nouakchott aligning with Rabat’s positions relating to the Sahara issue.

The formation estimated yesterday in a press release that “these projects lack realism because they neglect the question of the Sahara, which we fear is a prelude to our involvement in a conflict from which we have withdrawn for decades, abandonment of our position of positive neutrality, and recognition of the right of the brotherly Sahrawi people to autonomy and self-determination.

“We denounce the shameful and insulting measure taken by the Minister of Energy and the Mauritanian government, because it represents a flagrant violation of the credibility and dignity of our country and the position of positive neutrality in the Sahara conflict” , castigates the left party which has no seat in Parliament. And to call on the authorities of Nouakchott “to withdraw from these suspicious agreements” with Morocco.

This is not the first time that the Union of Forces for Progress has advocated the positions of the Polisario in Mauritania, a country which has recognized the “SADR” since 1984. In addition to its participation in the Front’s congresses, the UFP condemned, in December 2022, the drone strikes of the Royal Armed Forces (FAR) which targeted Mauritanian gold prospectors in the area located east of the Mur des Sables.
