Canada’s women’s sevens team began the HSBC SVNS Perth with two victories at HBF Park on the first day of competition in Australia.

The team started the year by facing Great Britain. In the fourth minute, Asia Hogan-Rochester opened the scoring after a scrum and converted her own try. Hogan-Rochester added more points to the score in the sixth minute on a pass after contact from Florence Symonds.

Olivia Apps, returning to Canada’s women’s sevens team for the first time since the 2024 Olympics, converted Hogan-Rochester’s second try before scoring her own try in the final minute of the first half, officially reaching 250 career points in the SVNS Series.

Canada led 19-0 at halftime, with Apps scoring again early in the second half. Great Britain scored a try in the 11th minute, but Carmen Izyk, who made her debut for Canada last month in Dubai, helped Canada finish strong by scoring back-to-back tries in the final two minutes of game, both tries being converted by Shoshanah Seumanutafa.

Larah Wright, Olivia Sarabura and Gabrielle Senft all came on in the second half in Canada’s 38-5 victory to make their international debuts.

Canada’s second group match, against Fiji, was closer. Carissa Norsten opened the scoring in the first minute of play with a try, which Hogan-Rochester converted.

The Fijians took the lead in the final minute of the first half, leading Canada 12-7 at the break. The Canadians regained the lead in the 12th minute, however, thanks to an incredible run from Piper Logan up the length of the pitch, which ultimately resulted in a try and conversion from Apps to give Canada the 14-point victory. 12.
