On the occasion of his first plenary assembly of the year, with the prefect's participation for the first time, the Observatory of Price, Margins and Revenues of Reunion (OPMR) delivered a series of lessons on the 'Year spent, in a context of international instability and growing questions about the margins made by large groups operating in overseas. What to remember.

After a year 2023 marked by very high prices increases (+4%), inflation over a year stabilizes. If the figures of December 2024 have not yet fallen, the prices of the last twelve months have increased by 1.4%, almost similar to France (+1.3%).

Those who experience an increase above average are food (+2.4%, including 3.4%for fresh products) and services (+2.5%). Energy prices drop 3 %, including -11.3 % for petroleum products.

The OPMR also draws up a stage assessment of its transparency working group, working on a sample of 21 consumer products with the assistance of six brands out of seven.
With this striking observation: a product purchased 100 euros in France is sold 179 euros in Reunion, ie a difference of 79 %. Between the command and the sale in supermarkets, the OPMR identifies 14 stages, against only two in France.

“It is multifactorial. Some differences are justified, others we do not know. The freight weighs for 7 %, sea grant for 8 %, the margins of large distribution 22 %, when the value of 'Purchase is 56 %”details Jocelyn Cavillot, vice-president of the OPMR.

“What to look at is the relevance of these different costs, echoing with the vote which took place in the National Assembly and the speech of the Minister of Overseas. We must act on territorial continuity, regulation of margins.asks the OPMR.
“What is catastrophic in our territories is the concentration of margins upstream and downstream by large groups” underlines Jocelyn Cavillot, evoking “the GBH group, like others.”

This year again, the OPMR is asking for the continuation of the effort on the value for money, which had 153 consumer products in 2024 for a ceiling price of 348 euros. He claims in particular:

  • to expand the list to the 22 products which benefited from the recent drop in sea granting
  • to add products to combat the dissemination of the chikungunya epidemic (repellent creams, mosquito nets, electric rackets …)
  • To determine a ceiling price for each product, with capped sub -uniers.
  • to expand the list of participating stores
  • to remove taxation on BQP products, including VAT.

“This BQP is very useful, it is a way of responding in an emergency to the problem of expensive life”souligne Jocelyn Cavillot.
