Did a heavy goods vehicle lose a large quantity of diesel, which the downpours caused to flow into the Marne? Has the large fuel oil tank of a condominium cracked? Or was it a malicious act that caused this large oil slick on the Marne? Pollution of an undetermined quantity but deemed “significant” by the Paris Est Marne et Bois territory caused a major intervention this Wednesday evening, in Nogent-sur-Marne.
Around twenty firefighters from the Paris Fire Brigade went to the scene, near Square d'Yverdon, around 5 p.m. They worked for several hours to limit the pollution area by installing surface dams.
They had been alerted by local residents, who had discovered this layer of pollution on the surface. “It smelled very strongly for several kilometers” many residents of Joinville are surprised on social networks.
The Paris Est Marne et Bois territory also dispatched its on-call officers to the site, who remained on site until almost midnight. “They were able to use one of the newly renovated manholes to pump out part of the pollution,” explains François Roussel-Devaux, cabinet director of Paris Est Marne et Bois.
-The territory has carried out very important work to improve sanitation on all sides of the river, but “this type of pollution, whether accidental or voluntary, unfortunately remains inevitable”, laments Olivier Capitanio (LR), the president of Paris Est Marne et Bois.
As of this Wednesday evening, Voies Navigables de France and the scientific and technical police were on site to try to identify the cause of this pollution. The Créteil public prosecutor's office has opened an investigation.
