An albino red-bellied turtle was born at the Ferme aux Crocodiles, in Pierrelatte (Drôme), an event “rare“, announced the tropical reserve in a press release on Thursday.

“Special attention”

The aquatic species, native to rivers and swamps in Australia and New Guinea, is “relatively common in captivity“, explains the establishment, but “the birth of an albino individual is an extremely rare phenomenon, representing a true singularity within this species“.

La Ferme aux Crocodiles promises a “special attention” for the baby turtle, sensitive to light.

Albinism is a genetic disorder characterized by the complete or partial absence of pigmentation in the skin, eyes and scales.

In May 2022, a Swiss zoo welcomed the birth of a giant albino Galapagos tortoise, the first observed in captivity or in the wild for this species.
