What is this “weather bomb” that will hit France on Friday?

Dans The Lord of the RingsÉowyn means “joy of the horse”. Not sure, however, that this is the feeling that will soon animate the Irish, Scottish and English, who will soon be affected by a storm that bears this name. A “weather bomb” whose explosions could well be felt as far away as .

According to Météo-France, this storm will first hit Ireland “very quickly and intensely” on the night of Thursday January 23 to Friday January 24. This disturbance will extend to the morning of Friday 24, and should also quickly affect the north of England and Scotland. Wind gusts exceeding 130 km/h across the board are expected, with local gusts of up to 150 km/h.

ALSO READ Red alert triggered in Mayotte following the arrival of DikelediAfter having largely affected Irish and British territories, storm Éowyn will reach the French coasts on Friday, early in the morning, particularly on the Breton and coasts, already affected at the start of the year. “The winds could sometimes exceed 80 to 90 km/h on the Breton and Normandy coasts, and as far as Pas-de- between the end of the night and the beginning of the afternoon of Friday,” it is specified.

Disturbances until Sunday

“The disturbance associated with Éowyn […] will linger in the northwest of the country until Saturday morning. Rainfall accumulations will need to be monitored, particularly between , and Normandy, where we can get up to 40 to 50 millimeters locally. […] This change in weather will be confirmed during the weekend, where new disrupted passages are expected, probably accompanied by strong winds in the North-West on Sunday,” Météo-France further indicates.

Éowyn will therefore cause some mischief over the next few days. If it qualifies as a “weather bomb”, it is because the central pressure of this depression will drop very sharply between Thursday and Friday, from 970 to 940 hectopascals on Friday. Or more than 24 hectopascals, a figure at which we estimate that we can speak of a “meteorological bomb” (or explosive cyclogenesis).

Answer

As a reminder, a depression actually corresponds to an area of low air pressure, lower than neighboring areas, and around which the wind circulates counterclockwise in the northern hemisphere. The cold air currently present over the United States (where Los Angeles is still healing the wounds of the fires) participated in this storm, since the arctic air present over North America “will begin to spread rapidly over the western Atlantic. This will have the effect of exacerbating temperature contrasts, particularly in the depression formation zone, south of Newfoundland.”

“These thermal contrasts on the horizontal and vertical scale will considerably strengthen the zonal wind current (the famous rail of depressions) in which Éowyn will evolve”, which should therefore call for a certain caution, in France, during the weekend future.
