The Alliance Police Nationale union of Montpellier reacted strongly this Wednesday, January 22, 2025 through a press release, criticizing the recent court decision concerning an Algerian subject to an Obligation to leave French territory (OQTF). According to the union, this decision illustrates a lack of support for law enforcement.
The facts date back to January 15, 2025. A 24 year old Algerianwell known to the justice services, was arrested in flagrante delicto by a national police patrol while he was stole a scooter in Montpellier. Placed in police custody, the situation worsened during his hearing: the suspect allegedly violently resisted by refusing to return to the cell, injuring two police officers in the altercation.
Despite these facts, the young Algerian was released at the end of his judgment in immediate appearance before the criminal court. This decision, contrary to the requisitions of the prosecution, sparked the indignation of the police union. “Alliance Police Nationale provides its full support to the injured police officers and wishes them a speedy recovery. We are scandalized once again by this lack of criminal response which discredits the action of the police. This only reinforces a feeling of impunity already well anchored among offenders,” declared David Augé, departmental secretary ofAlliance Police Nationale 34.

The Algerian left the courthouse free
The defendant, who had to leave the territory, left the Pierre-Flotte courthouse free, according to the daily Le Métropolitain which published the information. For the union, this situation sends a bad signal. “For Alliance, when you touch a police officer, you go to prison! », concluded Mr. Augé.
It is important to point out that the same source did not indicate the reasons given by the Montpellier court to free the young Algerian. Is there a legal basis to this decision which bothers the police union in Montpellier? Was he released in accordance with the law or did the judges decide to ensure impunity for an alleged offender?
