A risk of 4 on a scale of 5. Due to the latest snowfall on the heights of the massifs which makes the snow cover unstable, the risk of avalanches is considered “high” for the day of this Thursday, January 23 in the Alps South. Météo France has placed the departments of Hautes-Alpes and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence on orange avalanche alert, starting this Thursday, January 23.
-This vigilance concerns five massifs of the Southern Alps: Champsaur, Pelvoux, Embrunnais Parpaillon, Ubaye, Haut-Verdon. According to the European risk scale, this means that avalanches can trigger spontaneously on many slopes and that the risk is increased by the passage of a skier or hiker.
The authorities call on skiers not to practice ski touring or off-piste skiing and emphasize that these practices also compromise the safety of rescuers in the event of an accident.
The Dvoluy, Thabor, Queyras and Mercantour massifs are classified as “high” risk (level 3/5). Caution is also recommended here.
