Teachers gathered in front of the rectorate this Thursday, January 23 before leaving to demonstrate in the streets of Mamoudzou. According to the unions, the conditions are not met for the start of the school year next Monday in good conditions.

Around 300 teachers, according to the unions, demonstrated in Mamoudzou this Thursday, January 23. The procession left the rectorate mid-morning to go around the Zéna M'déré roundabout before returning to its starting point. The unions, already mobilized this Monday on the occasion of the administrative start, oppose the conditions proposed for the resumption of classes on January 27.

The cyclone destroyed establishments, so there are insecurity problems“, explains Youssouf Abdallah, member of SNUipp-FSU. “The rectorate takes us into DIY, we want to welcome the students in good conditions.” He asks that “the rectorate, or rather the government, is committed to rebuilding these establishments as quickly as possible.” So what about the resumption of classes while waiting for the end of these projects? “We want action, they could at least start doing something“, replies the trade unionist.

Teachers also want guarantees to allow their colleagues who have lost their homes to return to the territory and an increase in the index point to strengthen the attractiveness of Mayotte. A delegation was received by the rectorate, the meeting does not seem to have been fruitful since the continuation of the strike was announced at its end.

The situation is disparate across the territory: some establishments have suffered heavy damage, others have already communicated their schedule for the start of the school year. In some colleges, the usual timetable applies, in others students are only welcomed for four hours per day. According to the rector of Mayotte on Culture this Monday, January 20, building inspections revealed that 39 schools are unable to operate out of 221.Five establishments are significantly impacted” on the 33 middle and high schools. In addition to class rotations, the rectorate also relies on the broadcasting of courses in Mayotte la 1ère and access to the digital resources of the CNED for example to ensure educational continuity. The Minister of Education national, Elisabeth Borne, is expected the week of January 27 in Mayotte.
