A rescue operation of a migrant boat was carried out this Tuesday, January 21. It made it possible to rescue 59 people, who were brought ashore before being taken into care.

59 people were rescued and sheltered during an attempt to cross the Channel this Tuesday, January 21, announced the maritime prefecture of the Channel and the North Sea in a press release.

After being alerted of the departure of a migrant boat in the morning, rescuers from the regional operational surveillance and rescue center (CROSS) began a search.

The boat suffered “a series of breakdowns”

After a phase of “close monitoring” of the boat at the start of the afternoon off the , all the passengers were evacuated at their request, following “a series of breakdowns”.

A total of 59 people were on board. They were “dropped ashore at the end of the evening and picked up” in Boulogne-sur-Mer (Pas-de-).

This Wednesday, January 22, the lifeless body of a man aged around twenty, originally from Yemen, was discovered on the beach of Sangatte (Pas-de-Calais), a regular departure point for England .

“If you are a victim or witness of a sea event, contact emergency services by telephone by dialing number 196 or on channel 16 of your VHF,” reminds the prefecture.

According to the report from the Pas-de-Calais prefecture, at least 77 migrants died in 2024 while trying to reach England aboard small boats, a record since the start of this type of crossing in 2018.
