“It makes you nauseous”: a “rotten egg smell” in the beautiful neighborhoods of Oise

“It’s really unpleasant and I’ve felt it since last summer,” confides a retiree. For several months, residents of Chantilly (Oise) have been complaining of strong, nauseating odors. Several trails are mentioned, all leading to the town of Saint-Maximin, a few kilometers away. Some talk about stone extraction quarries, others about a waste landfill.

Many residents have expressed their dissatisfaction on the Facebook group “You Know That You Are From Chantilly When…”, where the comments of complaints are piling up, evoking “a smell of rotten eggs”. Married* (the first name has been changed), a 63-year-old retiree, has lived in the upper part of the city for thirty years. She explains that these odors have persisted for more than a year: “I smell them in the morning and evening, I only open the windows in the morning to ventilate and I immediately close them because it's so unbearable. »
