The “Russian spy ship” Yantar, which had already been spotted a few weeks ago above submarine cables, was tracked in the English Channel this week by the Royal Navy, the British Ministry of Defense announced on Wednesday January 22 in a press release. The Russian ship, which is now in the North Sea, is “used to gather intelligence and map the UK's critical underwater infrastructure”, Defense Minister John Healey also told MPs.
“The UK is playing a major role in countering the growing Russian threat to European coastal infrastructure, continues the ministry press release which adds: “The British Air Force will supply aircraft to a new NATO deployment which will strengthen infrastructure protection in the Baltic Sea”.
