Seasonal flu is losing ground in Switzerland. Laboratory-confirmed cases fell last week, from nearly 2,340 to less than 2,000, according to the latest figures published Wednesday by the Federal Office of Public Health (OFSP).

In total, 1,988 cases of influenza were laboratory confirmed in Switzerland and Liechtenstein last week, a number similar to the first week of January. Before that, the highest figure reached this season was recorded in the week of January 6-12, with 2,338 confirmed infections.

According to the latest figures, Jura remains the canton proportionally most affected with nearly 43 confirmed cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Ticino (41.93) and Glarus (40.42) are also well above the Swiss average of 22 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

More cases in French-speaking Switzerland

If the flu is still circulating particularly in French-speaking Switzerland – notably in the cantons of Geneva (34.32), Neuchâtel (29.73) and Vaud (27.9) – it has also moved towards the east of the country. More German-speaking cantons than the previous week reported cases higher than the Swiss average, according to figures from the OFSP.

These figures only include laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza. The actual number of people suffering from the flu is therefore higher.

The seasonal flu epidemic began in mid-December. Symptoms of a flu infection are sudden fever (>38°C) accompanied by cough or sore throat.
