The city of Paris has begun the reorganization of cyclist and pedestrian traffic at Porte de Montreuil, before the start of major works planned for 2026.
It’s a nearly 10-year-old project that’s finally about to finally come to fruition. A year and a half after focusing on the subject, the Parisian majority began the first renovation work on the Porte de Montreuil.
The city of Paris has reorganized traffic at Porte de Montreuil for cyclists and pedestrians. Until now, bicycles and pedestrians were forced to go around the outside of the roundabout, which required crossing all the ramps connecting Porte de Montreuil to the ring road.
The new development consists of a double path, on foot or by bike, carried out on the inside edge of the roundabout. It is also separated from the roadway. The ring is connected to avenue de la porte de Montreuil and rue de Paris via crossings protected by traffic lights.
A temporary arrangement before major work
But this development remains temporary, before the start of major works planned for 2026. Other developments will be put in place from the second quarter of 2026. The permit to develop the entire square was submitted last week, indicates Le Parisien, which is confirmed by Lamia El Aaraje's office at BFM Paris Île-de-France.
-The roundabout must be covered by a light steel structure. Where possible, spaces will be pedestrianized and vegetated, with 700 trees planted. The two-way cycle path will be perpetuated, and cars will always have two to three lanes, compared to the current three.
The developer in charge of the construction of the building, Nexity, will build 26,000m² of surface area, including 18,000m² of offices and 1,000m² of municipal health center. One of the buildings will have a café, shops and a food hall to bring the site to life. The flea market will remain outdoors.
The work should end in 2030, at an estimated cost of 220 million euros.
