The new Renault 5 is the victim of an embarrassing bug

Recently voted Car of the Year 2025, the new electric Renault 5 is experiencing some teething problems. Several owners have complained of not being able to operate their car's gearbox. The brand has already taken a first step forward.

There are glitches that can mar the start of a model's career. Citroën particularly paid the price with the software part of its new ë-C3. Inability to activate the indicators, windshield wipers that do not work, difficult smartphone connectivity or even “ electric traction system fault ”, so many youthful worries that the rafter builder is still sorting out.

It is now Renault's turn to encounter some software bugs. And it is on its model, recently elected car of the year on January 10, the electric R5, that the first feedback was made on January 7 by owners, we can read on the brand's official forum.

Unable to switch to “Drive”

A motorist found it impossible to activate the forward (D) or reverse (R) gear of his Renault 5, leaving it stuck in neutral (N). This would not be an isolated case. According to the author of the message on the forum, this is the second tow for the wrecker, for exactly the same reasons. This immobilization occurred on other copies, but did not require repairs. In their case, simply waiting fixed the problem.

A solution provided by Renault

Renault obviously recognized the problem and even published on the forum a procedure to follow in the event of difficulties. The manufacturer recommends carrying out a “ long fall asleep » by “closing your vehicle completely and leaving it for 20 to 30 minutes to allow the system to turn off”.

We also learn that the manufacturer is working on a corrective update, which will be deployed remotely soon. If the problem persists, a visit to the workshop will unfortunately be necessary. Hoping that this will not generally affect all the copies released so far. The new electric Renault 5 has also passed the 10,000 deliveries mark since its launch in the fall of 2024.
