Nuclear risk: iodine tablets have arrived in pharmacies around the military port of Toulon

The preventive campaign to make stable iodine tablets available in , La Seyne, Ollioules and Saint-Mandrier was launched on Monday. Some 103 pharmacies in these four municipalities located within the perimeter of the Special Intervention Plan (PPI) of the military port were supplied. These pellets protect the thyroid in the event of accidental exposure to radioactivity.

Notable clarification: the Saint-Mandrier peninsula has just been integrated into this PPI, the area of which is now included within a radius of 5 kilometers around the nuclear boiler rooms of the French Navy's ships. A total of five attack submarines and the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle are equipped with “atomic” propulsion.

No increase in nuclear risk

At the helm of the system, the Ministry of the Armed Forces explains that individuals residing in the four cities concerned are therefore invited to go to a pharmacy supplying stable iodine. No proof is necessary. For businesses, you must first complete a withdrawal form available on the prefecture website. However, it will remain imperative to wait for instructions from the prefect to ingest these tablets.

Remember that it was following the accident at the Fukushima power plant in March 2011 that the public authorities decided to extend, from two to five kilometers, the PPI perimeters of the four French military ports. “This increase in radius aims to strengthen the responsiveness of public authorities as well as the awareness and protection of populations. It is in no way linked to an increase in nuclear risk”underlines the Var prefecture.
