Carnival 2025 officially began this Sunday, January 19, with the majestic arrival of the Prince of the West. Representing the four elements of life, he received the keys to the city on the Roche Bleue site. A ceremony rich in color and tradition which enchanted the audience present.

The festivities began with great fanfare on Sunday afternoon in Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni. From 3 p.m., the carnival groups paraded down Avenue du Colonel Chandon before converging on Roche Bleue beach. Among them, the unmissable Avalanche, Rage Band's, Vansé, les Ptits Laurent, Batocal, Renésan's, and the group Les Étoiles accompanied by other local groups, captivated an audience who came in large numbers to attend this event.

At 5 p.m., the Prince of the West, symbol of the four elements – the sun, water, wind, and earth – made his appearance on a podium specially set up for the occasion. Welcomed by the elected delegate for culture, Renée-Lise Briquet, the elected delegate for culture, representing the mayor Sophie Charles, he received the keys to the city, marking the official opening of Carnival 2025.

“This ceremony is a true celebration of our heritage and our environment,” declared Renée-Lise Briquet. Once the keys were handed over, the Prince attended the performances of the carnival groups, in an atmosphere punctuated by drums, songs and dances.

What struck me was the energy of the groups and the festive atmosphere. Seeing the Prince of the West was incredible, especially with the theme of the four elements. It shows that we can combine tradition and environmental awareness.

This opening day marked the launch of the Carnival festivities, which will last several weeks. With a warm atmosphere and high-quality services, the public is already won over. One thing is certain: Carnival 2025 promises to be memorable in Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni.
