To travel in Spain, motorists will have to adapt to a new rule, that of the V-16 system. This device is designed to signal stops on the shoulder.
No more warning triangles by 2026 on Spanish roads, only small rotating lights on the roofs of cars stopped at the side of the road.
French and Spanish motorists will have to comply with these new regulations on the Iberian Peninsula. A small yellow beacon capable of emitting intense 360° light for 30 minutes is sold for around forty euros.
Real-time position
The goal? Limit accidents because the object can be placed on the roof without having to exit the vehicle and be visible from a kilometer away compared to 100 meters with the triangle. “The V-16 is an accident signaling device which replaces the classic triangles to indicate that the vehicle is stopped on the road or that its load has fallen on the road,” indicates the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) on its website.
-The device connects to the DGT 3.0 platform to transmit the vehicle's position in real time, which makes it possible to display the location of the danger to other motorists. As of January 1, 2026, these rotating lights will be mandatory and subject to financial sanctions in the event of forgetting, with fines ranging from 80 to 200 euros.
If not in use, the box should be stored in the glove box.
