Coupe de (round of 16). EC – Cesson Saint-Brieuc: 3-1

For this round of 16 of the Coupe de France, the Cessonnais faced their neighbor Rennes from the REC. Normally scheduled for January 18, the match had to be moved to Tuesday evening for technical reasons.

During the first set, the two teams were looking for each other. Cesson, more dynamic and involved, managed to impose his rhythm thanks to a powerful and fast Arthur Ribous. The Briochins made fewer mistakes than their opponents and took the lead at the end of the set (25-22).

Cesson collapses

The Cessonnais started the second set with the same dynamism as in the first and everyone was involved. They quickly led the score with a lot of regularity in serving, but the Rennais gradually regained their rhythm and their power in serving. They chained together several series of aces with Jack Peter and Julien Legrand, which undermined the Briochine reception. The Rennais came back in front and pocketed the second set (25-21).

The Briochins suffered from the Rennes pace in the third set and literally collapsed (15-25).

The fourth set was a copy of the third, the Cessonnais trying to save the furniture. Digaire and Ribous put power into their serves and their attacks, but the Rennais were in their bubble and chained together the points on the serve and on the block. Nothing worked, the Briochins lost the last set (20-25).

The adventure in the Coupe de France therefore ends for them. “We knew they were stronger, we did well in the early stages of the match by winning the first set, but we collapsed afterwards. The most important thing now is to focus on the next championship match, Saturday, against Caudry and that Anthony Totele can recover from his hand injury,” confides Pol Digaire.
