On the evening of January 18, 2025, the Mayotte Regional Health Agency identified a case of imported cholera. The action plan developed and implemented in 2024 was immediately redeployed, in order to limit the risks of spreading the disease in the territory.
The patient was treated quickly and safely at the Mayotte Hospital Center (CHM) a few hours after his arrival in Mayotte in order to stabilize his state of health. A specific treatment circuit for cholera has been set up within the CHM.
Upon receipt of the positive result and in order to avoid any spread of the disease, the ARS of Mayotte implemented actions to interrupt potential transmission of the bacteria and its establishment in the territory:
•
A first medical investigation team interviewed the case on Saturday evening in order to carry out an investigation into the causes, contact and co-exposed cases.
•
As of Sunday morning, a team was deployed to the housing area of the case in order to continue epidemiological investigations, disinfect the home, conduct environmental analyzes and disseminate health recommendations to people in the neighborhood. A preventive vaccination action was carried out around the housing area of the case.
Initial investigations concluded that it was a case of cholera imported on a flight from continental Africa.
The local authorities of Mayotte pay particular attention to the local health situation, and call on the population to observe hygiene measures (consumption of controlled water, hand washing) to avoid any acquisition or transmission of the disease. disease.
Any developments in the situation will be the subject of a forthcoming and transparent communication by the local authorities.
What to do:
You suffer from acute watery diarrhea and have traveled to a cholera circulation area, isolate yourself, hydrate yourself with drinking water and immediately call 15.
For her part, Mayotte MP Estelle Youssouffa declared:
1st case of Cholera in Mayotte. I repeat that we must increase water distribution to the population and put an end to stock shortages and rationing in stores. Our hospital is in disarray, the caregivers are exhausted. We are on the verge of a serious health crisis
