I really enjoy being able to help people and make them happy.

“We wanted something new, which concerns security,” recalls assistant principal Jean-Claude Deymier. This class of Civil Security cadets only brings together volunteers and benefits from scheduled hours to work on Thursday afternoons on risk and fire prevention, and every two weeks, firefighters come form. »

This Thursday, January 16, it is Lieutenant Roger Martin and Commander Pierre Guibert who are leading the training of possible future firefighters, with as many girls as boys, and on the menu the use of different types of fire extinguishers. Here, we joke, we don't hesitate to raise our finger to ask to speak, to the great pleasure of Emily Laupies, head teacher: “We feel that this training makes them more comfortable, pushes them to intervene, to ask questions. It is positive and beneficial for the whole class, creating a sort of emulation, while strengthening group cohesion. »

“Make it my job”

What motivates these young people to follow such training? “I'm in this class because I want to do a job that helps people, like in the event of a big accident,” explains Léo, aged 12 like most of his classmates. “I wanted to help people because they don't really know what to do in the event of a problem, and if there is at least one person who knows how to do it, it can help others,” adds Mila. Would she want to continue on this path later? “Yes, I would like to make it my career. » Inès got involved “because almost all of my family took firefighter training. » “Here, I learned how you can save people if they are stuck in the fire,” assures Julia. “Would you already be able to save some”, we ask him? “Now yes,” she replies with confidence.

If the training only concerns the fifth grade class, a student who passed this year in fourth grade decided to continue training with the firefighters. Just one? “It doesn’t seem like much, but if each establishment could provide a firefighter, that would be very good,” assures Jean-Claude Deymier.
