In 2024, firefighters from Sids 44 (Loire-Atlantique departmental fire and rescue service) intervened “more than 77,000 times” (+ 2.2%), reports Colonel Freddy Jaulin. The head of the West group of Sdis 44 was present this Saturday, January 18, for Sainte-Barbe from the La Baule-Guérande rescue center (3,242 interventions).
Act on housing and employers
To respond to growing demands, Sdis 44 lacks volunteer firefighters, notably around fifteen for the La Baule-Guérande center alone. Two levers are activated to compensate for the recruitment and availability of volunteers. “Nearly 1,375 agreements have been signed with public and private employers to allow employees to go on training and operations. Or 34% of the workforce », Points out Colonel Freddy Jaulin. It's good but not enough.
-The other aspect concerns housing. Land pressure is considerable in Loire-Atlantique, especially in the Guérande peninsula sector. Also, communities are getting closer to social landlords. “Many volunteer firefighters belong to socio-professional categories who do not necessarily have the means to find cheap housing”observes Colonel Freddy Jaulin. Communities collaborate with social landlords.
