They are accused of having robbed the Grau-du-roi church on numerous occasions since the summer of 2024. The damage could amount to several thousand euros.
This is the end of several months of mystery in the Camargue resort of Grau-du-Roi, in Gard. A couple was arrested on Friday for having repeatedly stolen from the town's church, the Nîmes prosecutor's office said in Figaroconfirming information from France Bleu.
The first kidnapping dates back to the summer of 2024, when parishioners noticed that the church trunk, the wooden chest housing alms money, had been emptied of its contents. The building does not have a video surveillance camera to identify the thief. The same scenario was then repeated multiple times, approximately every two weeks, tells us the vice-prosecutor of Nîmes, Frédéric Kocher.
Finally, a couple in their seventies residing in Vaucluse were arrested by the gendarmes on Friday. Until then unknown to the justice system, they had developed a careful stratagem using pliers allowing them to recover the money from the slot in the box, our colleagues indicate.
-Several thousand euros could have been stolen, however, the magistrate tells us that the “amount of damage is difficult to assess“. Their police custody was quickly lifted and a criminal order was issued.given their lack of history”, we are told.
